One of the most heated discussion topics amongst gamers last year surrounded the massive growth of Downloadable Content, or DLC for short. Although DLC is nothing new (even the original Xbox offered a large selection of online content for its titles), 2009 saw a huge increase in the number of developers supporting their games with expansions after release.
Everything from additional costumes and weapons to entire new campaigns and game modes were up for grabs, but almost always at a price. Some gamers appreciate the option of expanding their favourite games, even for an additional cost, but a growing number are speaking out against the controversial nature of some downloadable content.
Downloadable Controversy
Capcom bore the brunt of gamers’ rage in 2009 over their Resident Evil 5 DLC, which added a new ‘versus’ mode to the game at an initial cost of $5. The disapproval was immediately evident in forums. Many fans claimed that such basic content should have been provided as standard, and not released later at an additional charge.
