Galloway Forest Park covers an area of around three hundred square miles in the extreme south-west of Scotland. Only a couple of hours by car from Glasgow, it encompasses the Merrick, Galloway’s highest point, and with its moorland, woodland, farmland and wetland it is home to a huge range of wildlife. In the park, with a little luck, the visitor can see creatures including:

  • Red deer
  • Grouse
  • Red squirrels
  • Otters
  • Wild goats

As well as its wildlife, the park is widely used for recreation. Visitor centres and facilities (including car parks, visitor centres, toilets and bird hides) are provided at various locations and the park is widely used by walkers, anglers, canoeists and mountain bikers. From November 2009 the designation of the park as a Dark Sky Park has focussed attention on a new activity – stargazing.

What is a Dark Sky Park?

The designation of ‘Dark Sky Parks’ is established by the International Dark Sky Association, a body whose declared aim is to preserve and protect the nighttime environment and our heritage of dark skies. A key part of this mission involves the education of the public worldwide in the importance of preserving true darkness.
