Milford, Delaware is the largest town south of the state capital, Dover. Originally known for its shipbuilders, the town has evolved into a mixture of history and modern era conveniences. Many of the original homes that were built when Milford was founded are still standing, although not necessarily in the same condition they were in when they were built. Many have been remodeled over the years, while some have fallen into disrepair.
The History of The Towers
The Towers is one of the town's original homes and the site has undergone some changes, but still has its Victorian era charm. The home was built in 1783, but there is no record of the original owners. In the early 1800s, it was the home of John Lofland, known as the “Milford Bard”.
John Lofland was originally a doctor who ended his practice to become a writer. He wrote poetry and prose and was a contemporary of Edgar Allen Poe. In fact, legend has it he and Poe entered a contest in Baltimore at one time to see who could write lines of prose faster, and Lofland won.
