Let me start out by saying, I am not, typically, a staunch defender of nursing homes. I believe that many have the best intentions, but intentions are often not kept. The attrition rate, both in clinical staff and operational staff, is too high for true continuity of care. If the nursing home is a chain-owned entity, the focus is on census growth; period. If the community is locally owned and operated, the building is fighting to simply keep their head above water.
However, I have seen numerous families upset with staff for not calling 911 for perceived emergencies. In a number of nursing homes I have worked with, the staff has informed the family that it is against policy for the nursing home to call 911. Rather, they use local, privately owned ambulance providers. When a loved one falls, or is short of breath, family members do not want to hear that calling 911 is against policy; they want action. There is a solid reason for not calling 911.
