Cartagena is situated in the province of Murcia in southern Spain and has a long and fascinating history, yet its also modern, vibrant and has all the facilities you could wish for. One of the most interesting things about Cartagena is that you can literally see the layers of history, one upon the other as the City Council has gone to a lot of trouble to preserve ancient ruins and sites: Roman, Baroque, Modernist all one above the other, delighting the eye wherever you look.

Hannibal

The city was known by the Phoenicians and was used as a port but became a proper city when Hasdrúbal, the Carthaginian general founded it when the original city of Carthage was overrun by the Romans in 230 BC. It was from here that the famous Hannibal took his elephants across the alps to fight against Rome in an attempt to recapture his birthright. The silver mines, which are dotted in the hills around Cartagena helped fund the expedition, but Hannibal was unsuccessful and the city fell to the Romans.
